When Getting An Internet MBA Makes Good Financial Sense

Working toward an internet MBA makes a lot of good financial sense. For starters, you are likely to earn more money once you earn an MBA. Getting an MBA used to mean that you had to leave your job and return to school full time. This was a massive loss of income and severe strain and hardship on the family. Not only would you lose your income, but your benefits and chances at a promotion too. An internet MBA means you can work toward your degree from your own home in your spare time.

Choosing the Right School

If getting an MBA will not help you in the long run at the job you have now, before you apply to any school consider where you want to go with an internet MBA. Does this mean a whole new field? When checking out various schools ask what companies usually hire their graduates. What fields of study provide the best opportunities? Be sure the school has lots of interested employers for your chosen field.

Once you have a list of the companies that hire graduates from a particular school, then do some research. Many companies publish the starting salaries for internet MBA degrees. The average is about $65,000 per year. You do not want to go through the expense and hassle of getting an internet MBA degree to find yourself drawing unemployment because there are no jobs available.

Do the Math

How much is your job worth today? Take your salary, plus the benefits including all insurance plans. These can include medical, dental, vision, accidental death and dismemberment and life insurance. How much is your 401k worth and how much does your employer match? Does your company offer stock options? If so, how many shares of stock do you own and what is the current market value? On average for someone with a BS degree this usually totals $130k per year. How much would that be if you were earning $65k or more per year?

Does your current employer offer tuition re-imbursement? If so, how long do you have to stay with the company after you get your MBA? Will they guarantee you a promotion? A few years ago, employers were reluctant to offer tuition re-imbursement for internet MBAs. However, that trend is changing. Not only are online schools accredited, they meet or exceed the standards for accreditation in most states. By being able to enroll in an online school you can keep your current job and work on your internet MBA at home. The potential for earning more money per year makes getting an MBA a sound financial decision.
