University of Miami Approved for Offering MBA Program in Puerto Rico
2009-10-08
Getting your Master of Business Administration (MBA) just went tropical. According to the University of Miami School of Business Administration, the fall of 2009 will shuffle its Executive MBA (EMBA) program into Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, located just outside of San Juan at the El Nuevo Dia headquarters.
In 2008, Financial Times EMBA Ranking ranked the University of Miami EMBA program number 33 among all EMBA programs in the Americas. This program affords working professionals the opportunity to attend school and earn their MBAs while still working full time. Classes are held on Saturdays making it advantageous to those in the career field. The faculty at the Puerto Rico program will be the same as those who teach in the domestic programs. Heading up the EMBA program is UM School of Business's new Dean, Barbara Kahn, who was previously with the Wharton School. The program is a total of 23 months with a completion requirement of 48 credit hours. During the eight semesters, students are allowed to take two classes at a time. This course load makes it convenient for students to juggle both their career life and their schoolwork. The courses range from essentials of economic theory and legal implications in executive decision-making to the fundamentals of finance and human resource management, covering a wide variety of business topics.
The program is accredited by AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) and SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools). The program is offered in a number of locations with its main campus in Coral Gables, Fla.
A MBA is a great addition to a Bachelor's Degree, as it is currently a highly sought after business degree. It allows for advancement in competitive Corporate America, giving MBA-accredited individuals a leg up on those with only a Bachelor's Degree. An MBA provides an opportunity to earn more money, in addition to providing competitive credentials. If you are looking to climb the corporate ladder and move into an executive or senior position, an MBA makes sense. The MBA curriculum offers more specialized courses in business, valuable both in and outside of the corporate world.
There are both pros and cons to getting an MBA. It is a postgraduate degree, which almost always means higher tuition fees. Depending on your financial situation, it may require you to take out student loans; however, grants and work-study programs are often available, easing the financial burden. The UM 23-month program allows students to further their education in business and management principles, both domestically and globally. In turn, students are provided an edge in the corporate community opening doors to larger career advancements.
