Tips For Getting A Job With An Online Degree Program

2011-07-19

During this tough economy, many worry about the future of the job market and the security of their own jobs. What tends to happen during these tough times is that people begin going back to school to higher level degrees in the hopes of getting the higher, more secure positions. As a matter of fact, the Master of Business Administration, or MBA, is one of the most sought after degrees at any time, but particularly during rough times. That is because businesses simply can't run without someone knowledgeable in business and all its facets at the forefront. But getting the MBA is only the first step; the next step is knowing how to secure a position with it. An online MBA will speed up the time it takes to get the degree. With an online degree in your hands, the next move is yours.

The first thing to think about is whether you want to leave your current company or not. It may be that you are getting the online MBA in order to obtain a higher position within your company. If that is the case, then it is important to take steps towards obtaining that position even while you're still in school. Talk to the hiring manager, speak to your own supervisor and even speak to the human resources department about the requirements for the position. As a result of these conversations, your own boss may elect to give you a raise and a promotion based on the fact that you are working toward such a prestigious online degree.

However, if you are looking to find a new job, then you need to use your online degree as leverage. Many businesses are beginning to look only at applicants with at least an MBA. This will benefit you greatly in your job search. Make sure that your degree is prominently displayed on your resume, usually at the top or as near to it as possible. Your resume is the first thing employers are going to see. In your cover letter, it may be a good idea to talk about courses you took during your online degree program. Make sure the courses you discuss are pertinent to the industry or job you are looking at obtaining. Any internships or externships you participated in during your MBA program should also be discussed in your cover letter. This is your first introduction to the prospective company, so it needs to expel confidence and intelligence.

Make sure and select an MBA program that is related to the kinds of jobs you want. An MBA with a concentration in marketing or international business are the norm, but use your own judgment.
