Three Things To Watch Out For In An Online MBA Program
2011-05-08
Extending your academic knowledge via an MBA program is a viable option for many of today's business professionals. An MBA online degree can make you more competitive to employers. Further, it enhances your knowledge base, abilities, and experience.
There are a wide array of benefits and MBA programs to choose from. Each program offers distinct differences that can be tailored to a student's specific needs. In fact, many prospective students are now electing to complete their MBAs online.
MBAs online provide students with more flexibility and options when pursuing their graduate careers. With that said however, it is imperative prospective MBA students watch out for three major pitfalls of an online MBA program. Specifically, students should give serious consideration to: whether or not the MBA program is accredited/its reputation, the program's flexibility, and the coursework offered/required.
While there are numerous MBAs online to choose from, not all of them are recognized as an AACSB program with a strong reputation. AACSB is an accreditation given to universities with business management programs. Employers look for students that have graduated from an accredited school and program. MBA programs (especially those that are online-based) without accreditation hold little to no merit to employers and within the business management industry. Future MBA program students should search for a program that is accredited and is respected in the industry.
MBAs online were originally created to provide working business students with a more flexible approach to earning their degree. Students should aim to find an MBA program that allows them to be flexible with regards to their time and money. Future students should refrain from enrolling in a program that is too demanding with their already hectic schedules. They should look for a program that offers a wide selection of course times, fast-track options, longer options, and a relatively low cost. This will enable them to handle the program and balance their work and personal lives as well.
MBA students should also research the coursework offered and required before entering into an MBA program online. They should request as much information about the program through degree counselors and other university academic officials so they can become familiar with the expectations. Meaning, they should verify if the coursework is in line with their specific career goals, needs, and is manageable. Additionally, the coursework should be challenging enough so that they actually build upon what they already know.
Selecting the best MBA program online for your specific needs is no longer a daunting or impossible task. Prospective students must give ample consideration and keep the essential fundamentals and pitfalls in mind when researching--and ultimately, choosing an MBA program.
