How To Transfer Credits For MBAS And Post Graduate Programs
2011-04-22
Most universities have strict rules that make it difficult to change programs for MBAs. Those that will transfer credits usually take no more than 12 hours. The course description of the classes under consideration must exactly match those offered by the new institution.
Usually there is either a transfer fee and/or a charge for the class. Since the class was paid for when it was taken at the old university, this can often double the price paid for these hours. Other credits will simply not be allowed to transfer, costing the student more time as well as money.
Before deciding to transfer to a new program, the student may want to talk with an academic adviser at the old university and see if there is some way to complete the old program, either online or in an accelerated program.
If the student enters the MBA program expecting to transfer to another university at a later date, he should carefully choose the classes he will take in advance, making sure that he is taking only hours that will transfer to his new university. If he has planned this course of action in order to save money, he should first determine the entire cost of taking the class and then transferring it.
Besides carefully looking over the course description of the credits he intends to transfer, to make sure they match classes in his new program, the student should check the time limit that the new university puts on course work. Most will not accept something older than five to seven years.
A relatively new alternative is to transfer to an accredited on-line university. Many of these institutions are far more liberal about allowing credits for MBAs to be transferred and they charge less for the service. If the online college is accredited, it is usually as respected in the business world as any conventional school.
When the student makes his decision about where to finish his degree, he should then contact an academic adviser at the university to which he plans to transfer and ask him or her to help start the process. Part of that process will certainly include sending his transcript to the registrar of his new college. The student is responsible for requesting his transcript from the old university
He will most likely be interviewed before acceptance by the head of the department to which he is transferring. Also, if he is currently active in the MBA program at the school from which he is about to transfer credits, he should contact his department head to let him know of his plans to leave. This courteous departure successfully completes the process.
