How To Avoid Problems While Earning Your MBA
2009-10-02
Have you decided to enter an MBA program? Congratulations! The road ahead will likely lead you to a better job and expand your professional depth. But to be successful, you must anticipate the problems of entering a postgraduate program. You are probably entering your MBA degree program while employed full-time. Maybe you have a spouse, or young children and a house with yard work crying out to be done.
So, the first task in your return to student life is deciding how to handle time demands. Your paid employment, of course, must remain your first priority. But studying must move into the number two spot. Don't assume that since you are now a professional and older than in your undergraduate days, you will breeze through your MBA program. It will include some demanding subjects such as probability and statistics, economics, finance and accounting which may be new to you. You will need regular study time and may require additional help sessions with your teachers or other students.
Clearing a busy schedule to study and write papers can be challenging for the MBA student who already has a professional and, possibly, a family life. An understanding employer and spouse will go a long way in easing the transition into the MBA program and helping you stick with it for the long run. While few employers will let you slide in your work duties, many would be willing to make adjustments and offer flex-time to ease your burden. Likewise, there is no point in entering a program without the support of your spouse who will have to deal with having less quality time with you and less help with chores and children. In the long run, both your employer and your family stand to benefit from your new degree and you should have a frank talk with both before you embark on your MBA program.
Once these key players are on your side there are a few other things to consider in avoiding problems while earning your MBA. Make sure you have researched financial aid opportunities so that you don't pay any more than you have to for your degree. Explore your options even if you don't think you qualify. The financial aid office at your school is the best place to start. Also, be sure to consider online programs when you are choosing a school. They offer convenience and lower cost. In addition to online schools, many traditional colleges have launched online programs. Be sure to investigate the programs to make sure they are accredited by reliable organizations.
