Deciding Whether To Get An Online MBA Or Another Degree
2010-11-20
Earning an online MBA requires hard work, dedication and an interest in business. There are, however, many other degree programs that may better for an individual's interests and schedule than earning an MBA. Prior to choosing which degree program to attend, prospective students should determine their intended career path, degree level they would like to earn and a program's schedule.
Earning an MBA is a stepping stone to high-level management or other business careers. While the degree can be used in any number of positions, the majority of MBA degree holders remain within the business sector. As such, earning an MBA indicates a dedication to business as a career path. Prior to choosing a MBA program, individuals should identify their dream job. This dream job might not be obtainable for many years, but it will provide the basis for choosing a degree program. If earning an MBA will enable individuals to obtain that dream job, attending an MBA degree program may be a good choice.
The next consideration for prospective MBA students is the level of degree they would like to earn. Here again, obtaining the ultimate degree may take many years, but it will indicate the ending point and, as such, the starting point, for an individual's educational path. An MBA is a graduate-level degree. Applicants to MBA programs must have previously earned a bachelor's degree in business or a related field and also usually have experience working in a business environment. Individuals without these prerequisites must determine whether they are able to complete these requirements and therefore be eligible for MBA programs.
Another consideration is whether the degree level is essential for the desired job. A graduate degree, moreover, may not be necessary for the individual's intended career. Many times, experience can substitute for an MBA. The ultimate degree desired to be earned, therefore, might not be necessary.
Individuals should also determine what program best fits the demands of their schedule. Many degrees are offered through the Internet, but are also offered in a traditional classroom on weekends and evenings. Online MBA programs are common and highly regarded by employers. Additionally, they may permit students to complete assignments according to their personal schedule. While this may mean a student takes a longer period of time than the typical two years required to earn an MBA degree, it might be the best fit for an individual with a particularly demanding schedules.
Online MBA degree programs offer students that may be unable to attend in-person classes a chance to earn a graduate level degree. The degree, however, should fit with an individual's intended career path and schedule.
