Building A Resume With Online College Courses And Degrees
2011-08-20
It is widely recognized today that getting an online degree is beneficial for opportunities in the job market. People who have degrees are more likely to be hired by an employer. Online degrees are popular because people can earn them at their own pace and while carrying on with other activities that would otherwise not allow them to earn a degree in a traditional college setting. What people do not often realize is that taking a variety of online college courses builds their resumes even before they are finished earning their degrees. Depending on what courses a person takes, he or she will gain knowledge that will be be attractive to certain employers. Finishing with a degree that includes courses in various fields of study tells an employer that the graduate is well rounded. This is an attribute that is needed in almost every field today.
A graduate who is well rounded will have taken online college courses in a variety of subject fields. There are online degrees colleges and universities offer that are called liberal arts degrees. This means that a student does not pick a core subject to hone in on, but instead learns about several different fields of study. These fields of study often include literature, philosophy, math and science. These programs will vary depending what online school a person chooses because each school can add its own twist to the curriculum. Overall, though, the core subjects in a liberal arts degree are the same. Today, many liberal arts degrees are specifically addressing and teaching students the need for critical thinking. This involves identifying problems, and instead of dismissing them, solving the problems. Although this seems like a straightforward concept, many people do not know how to identify and solve problems. This is a trait that employers of any field will look for in possible employees, especially higher level ones.
There are other online college courses a person can participate in that will strengthen his or her resume. Even while a person is still earning his or her degree, he or she may be able to get an internship or part-time job because of the courses listed on his or her resume. For example, a law firm may hire a person as a paralegal even if that person does not have a supporting degree. The firm may hire the person based on the fact that his or her resume states that he or she is working towards a law degree and has completed certain entry level courses or higher in earning the law degree online. There are many benefits for people who pursue a degree through online courses.
